9 killed, many injured in explosion in Pakistan
At least 9 people were killed and 12 injured in a gas leakage explosion in a three-storey residential building in Soldier Bazar-3 area of Karachi, Pakistan. Rescue officials gave this information on Thursday (February 19). A Geo News report said that the explosion took place on the first floor of the building on Wednesday (February 18) night. As a result, a part of the building collapsed.
Rescue workers present at the scene said that all kinds of equipment and manpower are being used to find those trapped in the rubble. The initial assumption of the police is that the explosion may have been caused by gas leakage from a gas cylinder or a gas suction machine. The report also said that the rescue team has pulled out some people from the rubble. Two of the dead are Nazia (10) and Mohammad Riaz (60). In addition, the body of a woman has been recovered and the identification process of another is underway.
Officials said that a 14-year-old girl has been rescued in an injured condition. Among the injured are children. They have been admitted to hospital. Two people are believed to be still trapped under the rubble. Rescue agencies said the narrow streets around the building are hampering rescue operations. Meanwhile, police have cordoned off the area and security has been beefed up during the rescue operation.
