70 missing in Mediterranean boat sinking, 32 including Bangladeshis rescued

At least 70 migrants are missing after a boat capsized off the coast of Libya, bound for Europe. Thirty-two people, including a Bangladeshi, were rescued alive and two bodies were found. Italian coast guard spokesman Roberto D’Arrigo said the rescued people were nationals of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Egypt.
The German rescue agency Sea Watch said its aircraft spotted a boat in distress in the central Mediterranean on Saturday. It later found an overturned wooden boat, with some people clinging to it and others floating in the water.
According to the UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the boat had set off from the Libyan port of Tajora. It was carrying more than 100 people. The boat took on water shortly after setting off due to adverse weather and high waves and eventually sank.
The rescued people were taken to the southern Italian island of Lampedusa. The search for the missing continues. It is worth noting that hundreds of migrants have disappeared in the central Mediterranean this year, which has once again highlighted the precarious situation on the route.
