7 jailed in Malaysia for kidnapping Bangladeshi businessman

Seven people have been sent to jail in the case of kidnapping a Bangladeshi businessman in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. After their arrest, they were taken to court on Wednesday (July 30) and sent to jail by the judge. The Bangladeshi businessman was kidnapped from in front of a mosque in Sentul on the night of last month (June 26). Seven accused in this incident were arrested. Two of them are Bangladeshi citizens. They are Sohel Rana and Shahjahan respectively. The remaining five are Myanmar citizens. They are Abdul Majid Abdul Malik, Soforuddin Fazul Karim, Mokhtar Hussein Zaher Hussein, Mohammad Ismail Azita Rahman and Mohammad Arafat Hussein Jamal Mustafa. The seven accused were produced before the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (July 30). The accused have been charged with kidnapping for ransom. The charge sheet was read out before Magistrate Nur Elina Hanim Abdul Halim. However, since the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court, no confession was recorded. Deputy Public Prosecutor Iman Nurhideya Ijani said no bail was offered as the offence was non-bailable. The court has fixed October 2 for the next hearing. If convicted, the accused could each face a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison and caning.
