65 Bangladeshis are returning from Lebanon

A second batch of 65 Bangladeshi who voluntarily returned home due to the worsening security situation in Lebanon in the wake of the escalation of the conflict, will arrive in Dhaka on a commercial flight on Wednesday evening.

A notification from the Bangladesh Embassy in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, said that this group of 65 people, including two newborns, will land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 6 pm today after a transit break in Jeddah.

The flight carrying the Bangladeshi nationals is scheduled to depart from Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport at 10:50 PM local time on Tuesday and arrive in Jeddah at 8:20 AM local time and from Jeddah to Dhaka at 1:20 PM local time.

In this context, Foreign Affairs Advisor Md Tauhid Hossain had earlier told the media that the government has started the repatriation of registered Bangladeshi citizens from Lebanon.

He noted that a limited number of expatriates are being brought back at the initial stage due to insufficient seats on flights departing from Beirut.

He said, ‘In view of capacity constraints, we are exploring the option of sending a large team to Turkey by sea. From there they can return to Bangladesh by plane.

Incidentally, there are approximately 70,000 to 100,000 Bangladeshi citizens in Lebanon. However, about 1800 of them have expressed their interest to return to the country.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working closely with the Ministry of Expatriate Welfare and Foreign Employment to facilitate the return of Bangladeshi nationals stranded in Lebanon.

Earlier, the first group of 54 Bangladeshi nationals stranded in Lebanon returned to the country on Monday evening on October 21. Expatriate Welfare Adviser went to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to inquire about the 54 returned Bangladeshis.

At that time, Asif Nazrul said, ‘We are trying to provide VIP facilities to the remittance fighters who are coming to the country. We are committed to providing this service to expatriates. Soon we are building the lounge for expats, it will take about two weeks. We hope to be able to inaugurate with a big event.
