In this regard, Benapole Immigration OC Imtiaz Ahmed said, “Six Bangladeshi fishermen were detained by the Indian Coast Guard 10 months ago while fishing in the sea. Later, after exchanging letters at the high level of the two countries, they returned to the country through special travel permits. The returnees have been handed over to Benapole Port Police Station.
OC Russell Mia of Benapole Port Police Station confirmed the incident and said, “The returnees have been handed over to the private NGO Bangladesh National Women’s Lawyers Association after completing the formalities at the police station.
They had crossed the border into India while fishing in the sea 10 months ago. The Indian Coast Guard arrested them at that time and produced them in court,” said Rekha Biswas, coordinator of the Bangladesh National Women’s Lawyers Association.
She said, “The court thus sentenced them to 9 months in prison and sent them to Alipur Jail. The National Women’s Lawyers Association brought them back to the country with legal assistance. They will be taken to Jessore and handed over to their respective families.”
