5 Bangladeshis die in Saudi Arabia after performing Umrah
Five people, including four from the same family from Lakshmipur, were killed while returning to Saudi Arabia after performing Umrah. The deceased were Saudi expatriate Mizanur Rahman Mizan (40), his wife Farzana Akhter Sumi (30), school-going daughter Meher Afroz (13) and one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Subha Akhter. The driver of the car, Jilani Babar (30), also died in the accident. All of them live in Ramganj, Lakshmipur.
Their deaths have cast a shadow of grief over the area. The deceased Mizan’s father is Shahid Ullah, speechless. Meanwhile, Mizan’s middle-aged daughter Faiza Akhter (11), who was seriously injured in the same incident, is admitted to a hospital in Jeddah city. The deceased Mizan is the son of Shahid Ullah of Oshim Uddin Bepari Bari of Nalchhara village in Bhatra union of Ramganj upazila. The deceased Meher Afroz was a sixth-grade student of the local Turi High School.
The deceased expatriate driver is the son of Abul Hossain Patwari Khoka of Patwari Bari of Bishnupur village in the same union. Baharul Alam, the elder brother of the deceased Mizan, confirmed this information on Monday (February 16) afternoon. Baharul Alam said that Mizan was a Saudi expatriate. On February 3, he went to perform Umrah from Bangladesh with his wife and 3 daughters. They left their home in Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah 5 days ago. After Umrah, he died in a terrible road accident on Sunday (February 15) night while returning home from Jeddah. The incident occurred around 3 am Bangladesh time.
Rifatul Islam, the cousin of the deceased Mizanur Rahman, told us that they confirmed the news of the death of 5 people including Mizan through Parvez Bhuiyan, a Saudi expatriate from a neighboring village. In addition, Mizan’s younger daughter Faiza is undergoing treatment at the hospital. Ramganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Farashid Bin Enam said, “I heard that 5 Bangladeshis have died in a road accident in Saudi Arabia. The incident is very sad. We express our condolences to the bereaved family. We will provide all possible assistance to bring the bodies back to the country.”
