    5.6 magnitude earthquake shakes Philippines.

A powerful earthquake shook the Southeast Asian country of the Philippines. The earthquake struck in the northern part of the country. The earthquake measured 5.6 on the Richter scale.

Reuters reported this information in a report today, Wednesday.

The report said that a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck the northern Philippines on Wednesday, the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ). The GFZ authorities also warned of damage and aftershocks due to the tremor.

Meanwhile, the GFZ also said that the earthquake was at a depth of 37 kilometers (23 miles) below the surface.

On the other hand, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the Philippines’ earthquake and volcanology monitoring and research agency, said that the earthquake hit the northern city of Bangui in Ilocos province and they also warned of aftershocks and damage after the earthquake.

However, there were no immediate reports of damage from the earthquake.

Regarding the earthquake in the Philippines, Fidel Simatu, a disaster official in Bangui city, said, “The authorities are assessing the damage.”

He added, “It was not that strong. But the shaking was a little long.”

Earlier, in early December last year, the Philippines was shaken by three consecutive strong earthquakes. The three earthquakes measured 6.8, 6.4 and 7.6 on the Richter scale, respectively.

A tsunami warning was issued for the country’s coastal areas after the first earthquake. Residents were also evacuated from the coastal areas of Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental due to the threat of a tsunami. Later, the country’s seismological agency Phivolcs canceled the tsunami warning and told residents to return to their homes.

Incidentally, an earthquake also struck the Philippines in October 2022. At that time, the country was shaken by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake. And in July of that year, 11 residents lost their lives in a landslide after a powerful 7 magnitude earthquake.

It should be noted that earthquakes are felt frequently in the Philippines. The country is located on the geologically active seismic zone ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’, which extends from Japan to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Ocean.
