4 police officers including DIG Mollah Nazrul have been arrested
Four police officers including DIG Mollah Nazrul Islam attached to the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi, have been arrested. The Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) arrested them from different parts of the country in separate operations on Friday and Saturday.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam confirmed this information to the media on Saturday night. He said that a DIG and three police superintendents of Bangladesh Police have been arrested. They were arrested from different police units and handed over to the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB). They are looking into the matter.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam also said that there are various cases against the arrested persons.
It is learned that the detainees include former Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mollah Nazrul Islam, attached to the Rajshahi Sardah Academy, Police Superintendents Abdul Mannan and Abul Hasnat, attached to the Rangpur Range, and Commandant of the In-Service Training Center in Nilphamari, Police Superintendent Asaduzzaman.
Police sources said that the detained DIG Mollah Nazrul Islam was the former commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan and in charge of the Dhaka Metropolitan Intelligence Department. He is accused of extorting money through immoral use of force, including kidnapping and murder.
In the context of the change of government, murder cases have been filed against many prominent members of the police across the country on charges of using force in the mass movement of students and the public. In the meantime, at least 28 members of the law enforcement agencies, including former IGPs of the police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun and Shahidul Haque, have been arrested and are in jail in these cases. Out of these, information has come from the police that a total of four police officers, including DIG Mollah Nazrul, have been taken into custody. Mollah Nazrul was last working in the CID during the Awami League government that was ousted in the face of mass movements.
Mollah Nazrul was attached to the Sarada Police Academy on October 7 last year in a series of decisions on transfers, promotions, compulsory retirement and dismissal in the police after the change of government. Earlier, he served in various important units of the police including Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Commissioner, Armed Police Battalion DIG, Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB).
In April 2013, when Mollah Nazrul was the Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) of Dhaka DB, he was accused of arresting a businessman and accepting a bribe of Tk 1 crore. After this incident, a written complaint was filed with the Home Ministry and he was removed from that post and made an Officer on Special Duty (OSD). However, on November 12 of the same year, the ACC acquitted Nazrul after “not finding” any involvement in accepting bribes.
According to relevant sources, Superintendent of Police Abdul Mannan used illegal force during the elections and anti-discrimination student movements during his tenure as SP in Comilla and Sylhet. Abul Hasnat faced severe criticism for his political statements during his tenure as Superintendent of Police of Bagerhat to suppress the 2024 elections and anti-discrimination student movements, and Asaduzzaman was the Superintendent of Police of Noakhali district. They were widely criticized for their use of force and immoral activities during the elections and later during the student movement against discrimination.
