3 killed, 38 missing in Indonesia school collapse
At least 3 people have been killed after the roof of a madrasa building collapsed in Indonesia. Qatar-based media outlet Al Jazeera reported that at least 38 people are still trapped under the collapsed building.
The madrasa building collapsed on the Indonesian island of Java on Monday (September 29). Eleven people were rescued alive from under the rubble, while 91 managed to get out on their own.
Rescue officials said that many of the trapped people were teenage students. They had gathered to pray when the building collapsed. As a result, the death toll is expected to rise.
National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) spokesman Abdul Muhari said that the building collapsed in an unsafe condition during construction. He said that the sudden incident caused construction materials to fall on dozens of students and workers.
Officials also said that the foundation of the two-story building was unstable and could not bear the additional load of constructing two more floors on top of it.
