26 murders in Khulna in 10 months, what’s behind it?
There have been 26 murders in Khulna city in the last 10 months. Of these, at least eight people have lost their lives due to extramarital affairs and family feuds. The rest are due to drug dealing, area-based dominance, easy bike hijacking and other social crimes. According to city residents, concerns about the law and order situation in the city are increasing due to one murder after another. On the night of May 23, Naeem Molla was brutally murdered in the shipyard area of Khulna. The police investigation revealed sensational information. A housewife from that area, Sumona, made videos on TikTok and got involved in relationships with various men. She brutally murdered Naeem along with one of her boyfriends. Sumona was arrested after the incident. This is not just one incident, the police said that at least eight murders have occurred in the last 10 months due to extramarital affairs or family feuds. Experts say that the decline of family and social values, misuse of social media, and lack of adequate monitoring at the state level are responsible for this situation. Dr. Tanvir Ahmed Sohel, professor of the Department of Sociology at Khulna University, said that the lack of family morality and social discipline is increasing violence in society. At the same time, the lack of surveillance at the state level is a big problem. The murders of people of different ages and professions have created panic among the people of Khulna. Civil society says that now is the time to give importance to mental health, family ties, and moral education. Otherwise, the crime rate will increase further. Civil society also believes that the role of the police in maintaining the law and order situation is being questioned. Kudrat-e-Khuda, general secretary of the Khulna branch of Citizens for Good Governance (Sujon), said that the number of murders is increasing, but preventive initiatives or social awareness are not visible. The police have not yet been able to come out of their previous political tail-based thinking. On the other hand, the police say that it is not possible for the law enforcement agencies alone to handle this situation, but a joint initiative of society, family and the state is necessary. Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md. Zulfikar Ali Haider said, we have been able to unravel the mystery in most of the murder cases. Out of 26 cases, 22 have been solved. 84 people, including 46 accused in the complaint, have been arrested in these cases. He also said that this problem is not only the police’s, but the entire society. Only if the family, society and the state work together can such a situation be brought under control.
