200 rooms damaged on 4 floors
The Public Works Department has informed that it will be possible to repair and make the building number 7 damaged in the fire at the Secretariat suitable for use. Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, Deputy Assistant Engineer of the Department, told reporters on Monday. He said that about 200 rooms on the four floors of the Secretariat building number 7 were damaged in the fire.
On the other hand, Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry, Nasimul Gani, who heads the investigation committee formed into the fire, said that their initial investigation report will be submitted to the Chief Advisor on Tuesday. He told the media after the investigation committee meeting at the conference room of Home Ministry yesterday. Besides, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC) in charge of the security department of Secretariat has been withdrawn.
Nasimul Gani said, “December 30 (Monday) was given to submit the initial report on the fire incident at the Secretariat. A little while ago, I took permission from the cabinet to extend the time a little bit. Some tests will be done tonight as well. I will sit again tomorrow. I hope to be able to submit the initial report tomorrow.” I have taken time till 5 pm. I will try to submit the report before that.’
The senior secretary said, ‘You know that a high-powered committee has been formed in the fire incident. Many teams are working together here. The army team is working, the BUET team is working, the PWT people are working, the police and ICT people are also working. We are all working as a team. We are trying to draw a conclusion by collecting evidence from them, discussing what can be said initially, while doing that, and we can see that some things have to be tested in the lab. Some evidence was taken today and is also being tested. We were given time initially up to December 30; however, we have asked for one more day from the Cabinet Division a while ago.
The senior secretary, when asked, said, “We are hoping to submit the initial report by 5 pm tomorrow. If possible, we will submit it before that. But we have taken time till 5 pm.” On being asked what they found in the initial investigation, the head of the committee said, “Don’t ask such questions now. I cannot say.”. He said it is not possible to say at the moment how long the final report will be given. Evidence will be sent and received for some tests abroad, which will take some time. But we will do it as soon as possible.

Within a few minutes, the Fire Service team reached the Secretariat. 19 units went to the spot in stages and worked to control the fire. The fire was brought under control on the morning of December 26. The Cabinet Division formed an eight-member high-level committee to investigate the incident. The Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs was made the convener of this committee. The Director General of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Department became the member secretary.
