20 bodies recovered off Libyan coast

The local Red Crescent fears that all 20 bodies recovered on the coast of Brega in eastern Libya are Bangladeshis. The Foreign Ministry reported this information at 10:45 pm on Saturday, citing the Bangladesh Embassy in the country. The embassy also said that the citizenship could not be identified as the bodies were decomposed.

Several sources said that on January 24, a boat left the Libyan coast for Italy via the Mediterranean Sea. There were many Bangladeshi citizens on that boat. The boat sank and the bodies are floating on the Libyan coast. However, it is not yet known how many Bangladeshis were on that boat.

The Foreign Ministry said that the bodies were found 40 kilometers away from the shore of Brega on the Mediterranean coast in eastern Libya. The Libyan Red Crescent fears that the bodies are Bangladeshis, but has not received any information or evidence. The site of the incident is under the control of the eastern Libyan government.

The Bangladesh Embassy is waiting for permission to go there. Earlier on January 30, the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya said in a statement that it is with great sadness that the Bangladesh Embassy has learned from various sources that the bodies of several migrants have been recovered on the shores of Brega, on the Mediterranean coast in eastern Libya.

According to local rescue authorities, these bodies washed up on the shores of Brega after a boat carrying migrants sank in the Mediterranean Sea. Although various sources have reported that there are fears that Bangladeshi citizens may be among the recovered bodies, the Bangladesh Embassy has not yet been able to confirm this. However, the Embassy is maintaining close contact with all concerned, including local authorities, to collect detailed information.
