2 out of 9 burnt in gas explosion in Chittagong die
Two out of 9 burnt in a gas explosion in a kitchen in Chittagong have died. The remaining 7 are admitted to the capital’s Burn Institute. Some of them are in critical condition. Nurjahan Begum died on her way to Dhaka at 5 pm yesterday (February 23). Later, her body was taken to her father’s house in Dewan Hat, Chittagong at around 1 am. Nurjahan was buried in the family graveyard after the funeral that night.
Meanwhile, Nurjahan’s 17-year-old son Shaon died at 7 am while undergoing treatment at the capital’s Burn Institute. Relatives said that he will be buried at his maternal grandfather’s house in Comilla.
Earlier, the accident occurred in the Halishahar area early yesterday. The fire service said that a sudden explosion and fire broke out in a flat on the third floor of a six-storey building called Halima Manzil at 4:30 am. Fire service members reached the spot after receiving information. After about two hours of effort, they brought the fire under control. However, before the fire service reached the spot, local residents rescued the burnt people and took them to the hospital.
Initially, it is believed that the explosion occurred due to gas accumulated in the kitchen. Locals say that LPG cylinders are not used in that house. However, for some reason, gas leaked from the stove and the gas accumulated in the kitchen came out. The accident occurred in the Halishahar area yesterday morning.
