2 children burn in lantern and firework festival

Two children have been treated at the hospital after they were burned while setting off lanterns and firecrackers during the English New Year celebration on the Thirty-First Night in the capital. The matter was confirmed by Dr. Shaon Bin Rahman, Resident Physician (RS) of the Emergency Department of the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute.

The National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute informed on Wednesday that two children have been treated at the hospital after being burned while setting off lanterns and firecrackers during English New Year. Among them, one is named Farhan, 8 years old. He suffered 15 percent burns of his body. He has been admitted to the hospital. Another child has been discharged after providing first aid.

Dr. Shaon Bin Rahman, Resident Physician (RS), Emergency Department, National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute, said the injured children suffered burns due to bursting of firecrackers on the street to welcome the New Year, quoting the family members of the injured children.

While the DMP had already, under its instructions imposed a ban on any event, meeting, gathering or public assembly in open spaces from 6 pm of December 31 to 8 am on January 1, it also issued the conditions to close all the bars and to organize events on limited scale in hotels.

However, in actual practice, the denizens of the capital celebrated ‘Thirty First Night’ to usher in the New Year immediately after midnight on December 31. Fireworks and crackers bursting across the capital were seen flouting all restrictions of law enforcement agencies to celebrate this.
