    18 killed in stampede at Delhi station on way to Kumbh Mela

    At least 18 people have died in stampede at the New Delhi railway station on their way to the Mahakumbh Mela in India. The tragic accident occurred on Saturday night. Many were trampled in the overcrowded train while boarding.

    Indian media outlet Anandabazar reported, citing government information, that 11 women and five children were among the 18 killed. Many more people were injured in the incident.

    Local police say that the accident occurred due to the rush to board the Mahakumbh-bound train.

    After the announcement that special trains would depart from platforms 13 and 14, the crowd of passengers increased. At that time, people started running to board the train. At one point, several passengers fell in the crowd at the station due to the stampede. Later, the Delhi Police Railway Unit reached the platform after receiving the news of the stampede. At that time, members of the fire service also arrived at the railway station.

    In this regard, Railway DCP KPS ​​Malhotra said, “Two trains were late. Due to this, the crowd of passengers increased. Within just 15-20 minutes, there was a huge crowd. As soon as the special train was announced, everyone started rushing to board the train.’

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the incident. He wrote on his X handle, ‘My condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the stampede. I wish the injured a speedy recovery. The administration stands by the victims.’

    Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav expressed his condolences. He has ordered a high-level investigation.

    Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed his condolences. He wrote on his X handle, ‘Many people have lost their lives due to the stampede at the station. I wish the injured a speedy recovery.’ He also promised to stand by the families of the deceased.
