Khamenei’s first funeral held in Tehran
The first funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been held. The funeral of Khamenei and his four slain relatives was held at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosque in Tehran on Sunday (July 5). Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani led the prayers.
Millions of Iranians gathered at the Grand Mosque since early this morning to pay their respects to Khamenei. The coffins carrying the body were lowered into the mosque’s courtyard at 7 am. At that time, everyone broke down in tears in memory of their beloved leader. Most of the people present at the funeral expressed anger towards the United States and the country’s ally Israel.
In addition, Iranian President Masoud Pezishkian, Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni attended the funeral today.
The funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei began yesterday, Saturday, four months after he was killed in a joint US-Israeli attack. Representatives from at least 100 countries are participating in the seven-day event. It is estimated that 20 million people will attend the entire event. After funerals in Tehran, Qom and the Iraqi cities of Karbala and Najaf, the late Iranian leader will be buried in his birthplace of Mashhad on July 9.
