Tarique Rahman’s government’s first budget announcement underway
The first budget of the BNP government led by Tarique Rahman is being presented in the National Parliament. Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury began presenting the budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year at 3 pm today, Thursday. The budget presented by the BNP government for the next fiscal year is the largest national budget in the country’s history. The potential size of the proposed budget has been estimated at Tk 9,38,000 crore. This is the 55th budget of Bangladesh.
Against this size of the budget, the revenue target has been set at Tk 6,95,000 crore. As a result, the deficit between income and expenditure has stood at Tk 2,43,000 crore. To meet this huge budget deficit, the government has planned to raise money from both domestic and foreign sources. Tk 1,16,000 crore will be collected from foreign loans and grants and Tk 1,27,000 crore from domestic sources.
The proposed budget was approved in a special meeting of the cabinet before being presented in the parliament. The meeting was held at the National Parliament Building this morning under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. As per the rules, the budget is approved by the cabinet before being presented to parliament and then President Md. Shahabuddin gives his assent and signs it. And the budget comes into effect with the new fiscal year starting on July 1.
