15 injured in clash over appointment of new VC at DUET

A clash broke out between two student camps over the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor (VC) at the Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET) campus in Gazipur. At least 15 people were injured in the incident. Last Thursday (May 14), the government appointed Professor Mohammad Iqbal of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology as the new VC of DUET. However, a section of students rejected the decision and started a post-appointment movement. They demanded that a new VC be appointed from among the teachers of DUET.
Tensions increased further on Friday morning (May 15) when news spread that the new VC could join the campus. At that time, a clash broke out between the protesting students and the students of the other side who were in favor of the VC. At one point, a clash broke out between the two sides.
Witnesses said that panic spread throughout the campus during the clash. Police went to the scene and fired several rounds of tear gas to control the situation. Although the situation was partially brought under control with the intervention of law enforcement agencies, tension still prevails on the campus and its surrounding areas. The protesting students alleged that Chhatra Dal leaders and activists attacked them with outsiders. However, Chhatra Dal claimed that Shibir activists disguised as ordinary students created a conflict situation to destabilize the campus.
