2 Bangladeshis killed in BSF firing on Brahmanbaria border

Two Bangladeshis were killed in firing by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) on the Kasba border in Brahmanbaria. Two more are undergoing treatment in a hospital in Comilla in critical condition. The incident took place at around 12 am on Friday (May 8) at the Dhajanagar border in Gopinathpur union of the upazila. The deceased were identified as Mursalin (24) and Nabir Hossain (30). Mursalin is the son of Hebju Mia, a resident of Batanbari village on the Tripura border with India, and the other is the son of the late Maharam Ali of Madhupur village in the same upazila.
Lieutenant Colonel Sharif, Commander of Sultanpur Battalion-60 of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Brahmanbaria, confirmed the information. He said that the BSF opened fire on some youths when they entered the Indian border in a group to bring smuggled goods. At one point, they were shot and seriously injured, from where BSF members took two of them to Agartala Hospital. The two youths died while undergoing treatment there. Their bodies are now at the BSF camp.
Captain Lieutenant Colonel Sharif said that a protest letter has been sent to the BSF demanding the return of the bodies and a flag meeting is going to be held. Local residents said that at around 12 am, the Indian Border Security Force opened fire on some Bangladeshi smugglers at the Dhaajnagar border. At one point, the BSF took the seriously injured Mursalin and Nabir from there. They died while undergoing treatment that night. Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan, Chairman of Gopinathpur Union Parishad in Uttar Pradesh, said that the reason for the firing is not yet known. The bodies of Mursalin and Nabir are currently at the BSF camp in Tripura, India.
He said that the Dhaajnagar border is a crime-prone area. Criminals use the area for smuggling. Smugglers organize and bring smuggled goods including drugs from India. They may also be involved in this. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Chamiul Islam said that the young man killed in the BSF firing, Mursalin, is a college student. He has learned that the BSF members were taken away injured after the firing.
