30 killed in stampede at Haiti’s Citadel
At least 30 people are feared dead in a stampede at a popular tourist destination in Haiti. The accident occurred on Saturday (April 11) at the Citadel Laferrière in the northern city of Millau. Jean-Henri Petit, the head of civil protection for Haiti’s Nord department, said the incident occurred yesterday during the annual Easter celebrations. The death toll could rise.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Alex Didier Fils-Amy expressed deep shock at the incident, saying that the accident occurred “during a tourist event with the participation of many young people” at the site in the city of Millau. He said an investigation has been launched. All relevant authorities have been deployed to assist the victims.
It is worth noting that this historic fortress was built in Haiti shortly after independence from France. It was built by revolutionary leader Henri Christophe after independence. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
