Housewife raped in Hatia; What is behind the incident?

A smokescreen has been created around the rape allegation of a housewife in Hatia, Noakhali. Hours after being admitted to the hospital after being injured in the attack on Saturday (February 14) afternoon, the victim claimed that she was a victim of rape. The mother of three, a resident of the Nalerchar Ashrayan Project in Chandi Union of Hatia Upazila, came to the 250-bed General Hospital in Noakhali yesterday afternoon for treatment for beating. Later, she complained to the doctor about rape. She was then transferred from the emergency department to the gynecology ward.
Dr. Mostafizur Rahman, emergency medical officer at Noakhali Sadar Hospital, said, “The victim first reported a fight. Later, she complained about rape. She has been admitted to the gynecology department for immediate action on the matter. A final opinion will be given after the necessary medical tests there.”
The victim claimed that three men entered her house last Friday (February 13) night. At that time, her husband was tied up. She alleged that one of the three men raped her. She claimed that the attack was carried out because she voted with the Shapla Kali symbol in this year’s elections.
The victim said, “I had taken shelter in the kitchen with my husband. Leaving my husband there, one of them grabbed me and tortured me. The other was guarding the door.” However, according to the complainant’s neighbours, they did not notice any such incident. A resident said, “I have no idea about the incident.” When asked about the accused, the neighbours said they did not know anything about who or what was involved.
Another neighbour of the victim said, “We are not lying. We did not see anyone coming to the victim’s house and there was no trouble.” Meanwhile, accused Rahman has denied the rape charges against him. On the contrary, he claimed that his opponents attacked him. Accused Rahman said, “I did not rape. These charges are fabricated and false. There is a conspiracy against me. I have been offered lakhs of rupees to join the NCP.”
Elected MP Hannan Masud of the 11-party alliance has demanded an army operation, alleging attacks, torture and rape across Hatia. He said, “I have received reports of two rape incidents in Chanandi Union. Joining Shapla Kali is their crime. Despite repeated requests to the administration, no effective action has been taken. The army needs to be deployed quickly in Hatia and weapons recovered.”
Upazila BNP leaders have claimed that such operations are being carried out to humiliate them politically. Former Hatia Upazila BNP president Ala Uddur said, “The woman admitted that accused Rahim does not do BNP politics; he does Awami League politics.” We have come to know that accused Rahim never voted for paddy in the last election.

Hatia police said that an investigation has already been launched to find out the real incident. Assistant Superintendent of Police of Noakhali Hatia Circle Nurul Anwar said, “This could be some kind of exaggerated campaign. Basically, an attempt is being made to turn the incident into a big issue.”
