Nobel Peace Prize winner Nargis sentenced to 7.5 years in prison

Iranian human rights activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner Nargis Mohammadi has been sentenced to nearly 7.5 years in prison, her lawyer and an organization supporting her have confirmed. Al Jazeera reports.
Mohammadi’s lawyer Mostafa Neeli told AFP that she was sentenced to six years in prison for committing a crime and conspiracy. She was sentenced to another year and a half for spreading propaganda.
At the same time, she was ordered to be sent to exile in the city of Khosf in the eastern Iranian province of South Khorasan for two years, lawyer Mostafa Neeli said. Nargis was also banned from leaving the country for two years.
Neeli said the verdict was not final and could be appealed. He expressed hope that Mohammadi could be temporarily released on bail to treat serious health problems. Nargis Mohammadi began her hunger strike on February 2 to protest the fact that she was unable to speak to her lawyer and family by phone while in prison. “Today, on the sixth day, Nargis Mohammadi ended her hunger strike. However, her physical condition is very worrying,” the Nargis Foundation said in a statement. Nargis Mohammadi is the second Iranian woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Shirin Ebadi previously received the award in 2003 for her role in promoting democracy and human rights.
