Government ready to face any situation in elections: Chief Advisor

Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus has reiterated his commitment to successfully conduct the February 12 elections. He said that the interim government is fully prepared to face any situation. The Chief Advisor’s press wing made the statement during a telephone conversation with US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gore on Monday night (December 22). The Chief Advisor’s press wing said that in the nearly half-hour conversation, trade and customs issues between Bangladesh and the US, the upcoming general elections, the country’s democratic transition and the assassination of young political activist Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi were discussed.
In the phone conversation, Sergio Gore congratulated Professor Yunus for leading the recent tariff negotiations. As a result of the negotiations, it was possible to reduce the US reciprocal tariff on Bangladeshi products to 20 percent. The Chief Advisor said that the people of Bangladesh are eagerly waiting to exercise their voting rights, which were taken away during the authoritarian regime. He said that supporters of the ousted dictatorial government are spending huge amounts of money to disrupt the election process and their fugitive leaders are inciting violence. However, the interim government is fully prepared to deal with any situation. Dr. Yunus also said that there are about 50 days left for the election. We want to organize a free, fair and peaceful election. We are working to make it memorable. Trade Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin, National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman and Senior Secretary for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Lamia Morshed were present during the dialogue.
