School bus falls into ravine in Colombia, 17 killed

At least 17 people were killed and 20 injured when a bus carrying school students fell into a ravine in a rural area of ​​northern Colombia, the British news agency Reuters reported on Sunday night (December 14), citing the local governor. It said that the casualties occurred when a bus carrying school students fell off the road into a mountain ravine in a rural area of ​​northern Colombia.
Local media outlet El Colombiano reported that the accident occurred at 5:40 am yesterday in the El Chispero area, on the road connecting Remedios and Zaragoza. Initial investigations showed that the bus carrying 45 passengers fell into a ravine about 80 meters deep. The bus driver was among the dead.
Antioquia Governor Andrés Julián confirmed the incident in a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He said that the bus was traveling from the Caribbean city of Tolu to Medellin. The students from Antioquia High School went on an educational trip to the beach.
He added, “The students went on an educational trip to the beach as part of the celebration after the end of the annual exams. This is very heartbreaking news for the entire community at this time of December.” It is worth noting that although an investigation has been launched, the exact cause of the accident is still unknown. According to the country’s road authority, an average of 22 people died in road accidents every day in Colombia last year.
