To establish democracy, one must stay away from ‘mob violence’: Mirza Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that to establish democracy in the country, one must stay away from ‘mob violence’. He said this at the unveiling of the book titled ‘BNP in the 20th Mass Uprising’ and a documentary screening at a hotel in Gulshan, the capital, on Wednesday (November 19) afternoon.
Mirza Fakhrul said that while the International Crimes Tribunal is giving a verdict against fascist Sheikh Hasina for crimes against humanity, on the other hand, genocide or violence is being created. I do not know what this is a sign of. However, I think that a special group is working to look at the other side by reducing the importance of that verdict. Therefore, he has called on political parties to look at this issue.
Calling for the country to return to the path of democracy, Fakhrul said, “If we do not want to turn Bangladesh into a failed state, then we have to return to the path of democracy. We have to build democratic institutions. For this, he called on all those who believe in democracy, including BNP, to unite.” Regarding reforms, the party’s Secretary General said, “Today, if someone only demands reforms, it is nothing but a narrow-minded attitude. However, he further commented that BNP has been talking about these reforms for a long time.”
The BNP Secretary General said, “Today we are going through a transitional period. There is an oscillating situation. The time for the elections has been announced. The schedule has not been set yet. I hope it will happen. But the elections are not the end. Returning to democracy through elections and building a democratic culture—this is the biggest mistake.” Mirza Fakhrul believes that the judiciary, parliament, media and administration must be independent and strengthened to build a sustainable state.
BNP Standing Committee member Abdul Moin Khan presided over the program. The party’s standing committee member Selima Rahman, Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Haque, Zia Parishad leader Professor BM Nagib Hossain, BNP publicity secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, Jubo Dal president Abdul Monayem Munna, NPP chairman Fariduzzaman Farhad and Babul Talukder, editor of the book ‘Bintatam Ganoabhuytthane BNP’, also spoke at the event. Mahdi Amin, advisor to BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, and leaders and activists from different levels of the party were present at the event.
