Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway Blocked to Demand Restoration of Gazipur-6 Seat

Locals have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway to demand restoration of Gazipur-6 seat. Today, Wednesday (November 12), at around 10 am, leaders of various political parties and locals blocked the Tongi College Gate area of the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway. As a result, traffic on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway was closed for half an hour.
At that time, the protesters burned tires on the road and demanded restoration of Gazipur-6 seat. Later, at 10:30 am, on the instructions of local BNP leaders, the protesters left the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway at the Tongi College Gate area and traffic on the highway returned to normal. Meanwhile, locals including leaders of various political parties demonstrated on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway at Tongi Hossain Market and Tongi Station Road areas with the same demand.
In this regard, Tongi West Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Harun-or-Rashid told our time that traffic was stopped on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for half an hour from 10 am to 10:30 am demanding restoration of the seats. Currently, traffic on the highway is normal.
It is worth noting that on September 4, the Election Commission reduced one of the 4 seats in Bagerhat to 3 and from 5 seats in Gazipur to the Tongi Industrial Area of the metropolis (32 to 39 and 43 to 57) and declared the new Gazipur-6 seat.
After that, on September 16, several parties filed a writ petition in the High Court demanding restoration of the 4 seats in Bagerhat. After the final hearing of the rule on Monday (November 10), the High Court bench of Justice Shashank Shekhar Sarkar and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar Kajal declared the Election Commission’s (EC) gazette to reduce one of the 4 seats in Bagerhat to 3 illegal. The court also ordered that the four parliamentary seats in the district be maintained. Due to this order, the newly declared Gazipur-6 constituency has been blocked.
