6 teachers sick on hunger strike

Teachers of MPO-affiliated private institutions are on hunger strike for three demands, including a 20 percent rent increase. Six teachers have already fallen ill on hunger strike. Among them is Principal Delwar Hossain Azizi, president of the MPO-affiliated Education Nationalization Alliance and member secretary of the Bangladesh Madrasa Teachers-Employees Forum.
Adnan Habibur Rahman, central general secretary of the Third Class Employees Council, gave this information on Tuesday (October 21) morning.
Meanwhile, as part of the ongoing movement to realize the demands, it was announced on Monday (October 20) afternoon that the teachers will hold a sit-in program at Shahbagh today at 12 noon.
At this time, Principal Delwar Hossain Azizi warned, “We will wait until October 22. Even if the notification is not issued, Bangladesh has never seen such an environment that will be created.” We will bring everyone to Dhaka and surround the Jamuna.’
It is worth noting that since October 12, teachers and employees have been protesting under the banner of the MPO-affiliated Education Nationalization Alliance, demanding 20 percent rent of the basic salary, medical allowance from Tk 500 to Tk 1,500 and festival allowance from 50 percent to 75 percent.
Although the sit-in program started in front of the National Press Club that morning, they went to Shaheed Minar in the afternoon at the request of the police. Later, the police fired sound grenades, water cannons and batons, and at one point the teachers moved away.
Since October 14, all private educational institutions have been on a continuous strike in protest of that incident. Since then, teachers and employees have been holding multiple programs including sit-ins at the National Press Club and Shaheed Minar, long marches towards the Secretariat and blockade of Shahbag.
