Veteran Bollywood actor Asrani is no more

Popular Bollywood actor and comedian Govardhan Asrani has passed away. He had been suffering from various age-related diseases for a long time. He was 84 years old. He was admitted to the hospital for the last five days.
Born on January 1, 1940, in a middle-class Sindhi family in Jaipur, Rajasthan. His father ran a carpet shop, but Asrani was interested in acting, not the family business. He completed his education from St. Xavier’s School and graduated from Rajasthan College, Jaipur. To finance his studies, he worked as a voice artist in All India Radio.
Between 1960 and 1962, he learned acting from Sahitya Kalabhai Thakkar. Later, in 1964, he joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.
Asrani made his Bollywood debut in the film ‘Hare Kanch Ki Chudiya’ in 1967. In this film, he played the role of actor Biswajit’s friend. He also played lead roles in several Gujarati films.
However, his most memorable role was as a jailor in the film ‘Sholay’. His humorous dialogues and expressions are still remembered by the audience.
In his long career, Asrani has worked with legendary directors like Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Gulzar and B. R. Chopra and has given the audience laughter and joy in countless memorable roles.
