7.1 Magnitude Earthquake in Russia
A strong 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Russia’s Kamchatka region on Saturday (September 13), the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) said. Reuters reported that the quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). However, the US Geological Survey (USGS) put the quake at 7.4 magnitude, with a depth of 39.5 kilometers (24.5 miles). Japan’s state broadcaster NHK cited the Meteorological Agency as saying that no tsunami warning had been issued for Japan southwest of the Kamchatka Peninsula. Earlier, an 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck the same region in July, prompting a tsunami warning for the entire Pacific Ocean.
