Former South Korean First Lady Kim apologizes after arrest

The wife of jailed former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has been arrested on multiple charges, including stock manipulation and bribery. BBC News.
Former First Lady Kim Kyung-hee denied all charges during a four-hour court hearing in Seoul on Tuesday. But a court has issued an arrest warrant for her, fearing she could destroy evidence.
Prosecutors say Kim, 52, was involved in a scheme to manipulate the price of shares in South Korean BMW dealer Deutsche Motors. She is accused of making 800 million won from the scheme.
However, her husband is accused of doing all this before he was elected as the country’s leader.
Kim is also accused of accepting two Chanel bags and a diamond necklace as bribes from the controversial Unification Church in exchange for business benefits.
Other charges include interference in the nomination of candidates during the 2022 parliamentary by-election and last year’s general election.
Meanwhile, Kim looked very serious as he appeared at Tuesday’s hearing wearing a black suit and black skirt.
At the time, he apologized to reporters. “I sincerely apologize for causing trouble despite being an insignificant person,” he said.
Former President Yoon Suk-yeol plunged South Korea into crisis last December by suddenly imposing martial law. Yeol is now on trial for treason.
