Israeli opposition leader urges end to Gaza war
The Israeli government has lost the support of the people, the country’s opposition leader Yair Lapid has claimed. He also said that the Netanyahu government has no right to continue the war in Gaza. In a post on the social media X on Sunday (August 3), Yair Lapid said, “From time immemorial, an essential condition for Israel’s war has been the support of the people. If the majority of the people do not support the government, if they do not trust the political leadership, the state of Israel cannot fight.” He added, “None of these conditions have been met now. It is time to end the Gaza war and return the hostages.” Lapid’s comments came amid growing internal pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government for its failure to ensure a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of the hostages. Pressure is constantly increasing on Israel to end the war in Gaza and recognize Palestine as an independent state. However, analysts believe that the future of the region’s sovereignty has become uncertain due to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s stubborn attitude and the lack of a proper model for an independent Palestinian state. According to an analytical report by the US media outlet CNN, the possibility of its implementation is quite slim. The reason behind this is said to be the lack of a model for an independent Palestinian state in the modern world. According to analysts, a big question mark has been hanging over the existence of Palestine since World War II. On the other hand, Israel’s dominance over Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem has been increasing. Although the idea of a Palestinian state was included in the 1990 Oslo Accords, it has not been implemented. In addition, there is uncertainty about who will carry out administrative responsibilities. In this situation, even if an independent Palestinian state is established under international pressure, it is still unknown what its image will be or how the administrative structure will be created.
