Anti-discrimination and integrative identity no longer exists: Nahid Islam
National Citizens Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam said, “The anti-discrimination student movement is no longer where it was before. A student organization has been formed from there, a political party has been formed. The anti-discrimination or coordinating identity no longer exists. We will request the law enforcement agencies that if anyone commits a misdeed using this identity, they should take action according to the law.”
He said these things at a press conference organized at the National Citizens Committee office in Rupayan Tower in the capital on Friday afternoon.
When asked about fielding candidates for the next 300 seats, the NCP convener said, “After the party’s debut, we are now giving importance to the conditions of registration, focusing on organizational expansion. These will continue in full swing after Ramadan. We will think about it after that.”
Nahid Islam said, “We have said that we want to see the Constituent Assembly elections along with the national elections. Elections are not the only demand of the NCP at this moment. We want to see visible justice. The July Charter will be signed by consensus by all political parties. The people will be able to see which party is in favor of which reform – which party is against it. We want to see the July Charter implemented before the elections. We want to see the implementation of the July Declaration that was raised by the students as soon as possible.’
Regarding the interview given to Reuters on Thursday, he said, ‘I did not say that elections are not possible by December. I said that elections are not possible in the fragile state in which the police are. We are mentally prepared for the elections.’
The NCP convener said, ‘There were some miss codes in the Reuters interview. I had said that the well-off people or well-wishers in the society mainly cooperate with us in our financial matters. We are moving towards a crowd funding, online and offline focused. We will reach election funding including setting up offices through crowd funding. There has been wrong information about this in various media outlets. There will be a request for correction.’
Nahid Islam said, ‘The current police administration of the country does not have experience in conducting fair elections. Their capabilities have not been tested for a long time. The law and order situation must be improved before the elections.’
He said, ‘The first meeting of the National Citizen Party has been held. In today’s meeting, the National Citizen Party expressed concern and condemnation of the recent violence against women that is happening in different parts of the country, incidents like rape, eve-teasing. In view of these incidents, the Nagorno-Karabakh Party is expressing concern and condemnation. We call on the interim government to ensure the safety of women in public places. For this, the government must take strict measures. So that those who oppress women are brought to justice.’
