Turk to present UN report on Bangladesh in Geneva
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk will present the UN fact-finding report on human rights violations and torture in the July-August uprising in Geneva. He will present the report tomorrow, Wednesday.
According to the UN official website, the event will be broadcast live on YouTube from Geneva at 6 pm Bangladesh time.
The team will discuss with member states and civil society on the findings and recommendations for accountability, justice and human rights reforms in Bangladesh. Representatives of the interim government of Bangladesh and civil society in Bangladesh will participate in the event.
Volker Turk expressed hope that their recent independent fact-finding report will support accountability, reparations, recovery and reform as it presents a true and realistic picture of Bangladesh.
Turk said that Bangladesh faced a massive disaster in violence last year. The then government violated human rights by “brutally suppressing” the student movement.
He also said that Bangladesh is now planning for a new future. Their recent independent fact-finding report on serious human rights violations will make a “significant contribution” in this regard.
