Awami League leader dies of heart attack in police custody
An Awami League leader named Lal Mia (60) died of a heart attack after being seen by the police. The incident took place on Sunday in the Debarpar area of Kusumbagh Residential under Khulshi Police Station in Chittagong City. Lal Mia ran a grocery shop on the ground floor of Rajib Bhavan in the area. He also lived in the same building. Lal Mia was the joint secretary of the Debarpar unit of the Awami League.
Eyewitness sources said that on Sunday, two policemen including Khulshi Police Station SI Rabiul Alam went down in front of Lal Mia’s grocery shop on a motorcycle. The police members wanted to talk to Lal Mia about the case. Then Lal Mia fell to the ground due to fear and heart attack. Later, when he was taken to a private hospital medical center, the doctor declared him dead.
However, the victim’s close relative Md. Sharif said that the police came and forcibly talked to his uncle. At that time, he fell to the ground in fear. Later, he was rescued and admitted to a nearby private hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead. Doctors said he died of a heart attack.
Khulshi Police Station OC Mojibur Rahman said there was no case against the victim, Lal Mia. The police spoke to him to get information about another accused who was on a warrant. At one stage of the conversation, the victim fainted. The OC said that Lal Mia was not forced to speak.
