Protesters erase Mujib family name from RU
Agitating students have broken the nameplates of four residential halls, including two residential halls under construction at Rajshahi University (RU), and Sheikh Russell School Model School and given new names.
The students gathered at the university’s Shaheed Dr. Shamsuzzoha Square around 9 pm on Wednesday and started the protest program. Later, from there, they went to four halls and schools in stages with a procession and vandalized the nameplates and inauguration plaques. The program ended around 11 pm.
The university’s Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall has been renamed Bijoy-24 Hall by breaking the nameplates, the under-construction AHM Kamruzzaman Hall has been renamed Shaheed Ali Raihan Hall and Sheikh Hasina Hall by Fatima Al-Fihria, Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall has been renamed Nawab Faizunnesa Chowdhurani Hall and the students have also vandalized the nameplate of Sheikh Russell Model School and renamed it Riagop Model School.
During the program, students were seen raising various slogans including ‘I want hanging, hanging, hanging, hanging of the murderer Hasina’, ‘Inquilab Zindabad, Mujibabad Murdabad’, ‘Burn it, burn it’, ‘Mujibabad has no place in my golden Bengal’.
It was seen on the spot that around 9 pm, the agitating students started gathering at Dr. Shamsujoha Square. Later, they took a procession from there and arrived in front of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall. At that time, they demolished the hall’s nameplate, the inauguration plaque and other structures bearing the symbol of Sheikh Mujib. They gradually demolished the nameplates of the AHM Kamaruzzaman Hall and Sheikh Hasina Hall under construction.
Then, when Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall was demolished to give a new name, a problem arose with some of the students residing in that hall. Those few students kept shouting fake slogans. At that time, there was also an incident of throwing bricks and stones. When the protesting students left, the students of the hall set fire to the name banner in the presence of the proctor. The protesting students also vandalized the nameplate of Sheikh Russell Model School.
Fahim Reza, one of the coordinators of the RU anti-discrimination student movement, said, “The murderer Hasina is trying to revive before the highway stained with the blood of my brothers dries up. We, the revolutionary students of the university, have organized this program to erase the cultural presence of the murderer Hasina.”
Regarding general issues, RU Proctor Professor Dr. Mahbubur Rahman said, “The administration has no involvement in what happened today. And if the administration changes the name of any hall, it will be changed after passing the syndicate meeting.”
