Locals snatch accused from police in Thakurgaon
Locals snatched an accused named Sumon (25) from the hands of the members of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police while they were taking him to a vehicle after he was arrested in Haripur upazila of Thakurgaon. At that time, when the CID members felt insecure, the police members went to control the situation.
The incident took place at around 5 pm yesterday, Sunday in the Bangaon Bazar area of the upazila. Police said that Sumon is an accused in a case of Ranishankail police station of Thakurgaon district.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Haripur police station Md. Zakaria Mandal confirmed the matter. He said that a five-member team led by SI Jamal Uddin of Thakurgaon district CID police arrested the accused Sumon from Bangaon Bazar of Haripur upazila at around 5:30 pm. At that time, when the arrested accused was trying to take him to a vehicle, more than a hundred local people attacked the CID police and kidnapped the accused in a coordinated attack.
Zakaria Mondal said that when the Thakurgaon District CID police team participating in the operation fell into insecurity, they sought help from Haripur Police Station. Later, an 11-member police team from Haripur Police Station reached the spot around 8:30 pm and brought the situation under control. At 9:45 pm, the CID operation team was rescued and brought to the police station.
Eyewitnesses said that a group of about 150-200 people led by Mustafa, UP member of local ward number 5, organized to stop the CID police operation. At that time, the agitated crowd beat the driver of the microbus and broke the front window of the vehicle. Later, they snatched the accused Sumon from the police custody.
Meanwhile, after the incident, Thakurgaon District CID Superintendent of Police Sumit Chowdhury went to Haripur Police Station and investigated the entire matter of the operation. He said that an investigation is underway to identify the people involved in the incident. At the same time, efforts are being made to re-arrest the accused and legal action will be taken against those involved in the attack.
