DU suspends classes & exams, VC expresses regret
The Dhaka University administration has announced the suspension of classes and exams on Monday due to the situation arising out of the clash between students of Dhaka University (DU) and seven government colleges.
Meanwhile, Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan has expressed his sincere regret over the unfortunate incident on Sunday. In a statement issued late at night, he urged students, “Everyone should be vigilant so that no third party can take advantage of this incident.”
Earlier, they alleged that the university’s Vice Chancellor Professor Mamun Ahmed insulted more than fifty students of seven colleges yesterday evening when they went to Dhaka University to discuss their five-point demands. Demanding his apology for the incident, they blocked the Science Lab intersection since yesterday evening and took out a procession from there to the residence of the Dhaka University Vice Chancellor at around 10:30 pm.
Students of seven colleges began protesting by taking a position in front of the Mukti and Ganatra Toran of Dhaka University at Nilkhet intersection. At one stage, several hundred students came out of various halls of Dhaka University and chased them. As a result, the students of the seven colleges moved away from the Nilkhet intersection. Later, they united again and chased the students of Dhaka University. The chase continued until 1:45 am last night. At least 10 people from both sides were injured in the clash.

The police took a position in the middle to deter the two sides. At that time, the police were seen using sound grenades to disperse the students of the seven colleges. Later, four platoons of BGB were also deployed to assist the police.
At one stage, the electricity supply was cut off in the Nilkhet and New Market areas. At that time, the students of Dhaka University took a peaceful position on the campus and the students of the seven colleges in the New Market area. Later, they left their position around 2:45 am and returned to their campuses.
At around 3 am, a new program was announced by the seven colleges. As part of the program, the students of these colleges will take a position on the road in front of the seven colleges from 9 am today. At the same time, they also announced a boycott of classes and examinations under Dhaka University.
Earlier, Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said that due to unavoidable reasons, all classes and examinations of the university have been postponed today.
Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Niaz Ahmed has called on students of Dhaka University and seven affiliated government colleges to be patient and maintain harmony and cordial relations in the emerging situation.
