The drivers of the Dhaka Metropolitan CNG Autorickshaw Drivers’ Unity Council have blocked the road in Banani to demand immediate implementation of the daily deposit of 900 taka for Dhaka Metro CNG autorickshaws. They observed the blockade program by lying down on the road in front of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) headquarters in Banani on Monday afternoon.
The movement by blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh road completely stopped traffic on the road from Uttara-Kakoli to Mohakhali. This caused massive traffic jams in the surrounding areas. As per the assurance of the BRTA authorities, around 2 pm
The CNG-powered autorickshaw drivers withdrew the Banani road blockade and traffic flow normalized.
Other demands of the Dhaka Metropolitan CNG Autorickshaw Drivers’ Unity Council are – Registration (blue book) of 5,000 CNG autorickshaws approved by the government for Dhaka Metro in 2007 should be immediately given to the drivers; In line with the size of Dhaka, 15,000 more CNG autorickshaw drivers should be approved; if a CNG autorickshaw driver dies in an accident while working, the state should provide compensation of Tk 1 million; the right to form free trade unions should be given as per ILO Convention 87; all types of harassment of drivers by the administration should be stopped; no-parking cases should be stopped without determining adequate parking spaces; autorickshaws should be allowed to ply on the highway using lanes or bylanes and the anti-worker clauses and rules of the Road Transport Act 2018 and Rules 2023 should be repealed.
Banani Police Station OC Russell Sarwar said that CNG autorickshaw drivers had blocked the road in front of the BRTA headquarters for various demands. This stopped traffic on the Uttara-Kakoli-Mohakali road. They withdrew the blockade around 2 pm on the assurance of the BRTA authorities. After this, traffic flow returned to normal.
