    Waste management project slows down.

A project is underway to solve the existing waste management problems of Mymensingh metropolis. However, there are doubts about its timely completion. Although the project, which started in July 2022, was supposed to be completed by June of this year (2025), only 30 percent of its work has been completed so far. It is known that such problems are caused due to slow allocation, high cost of construction materials, complexity in determining the location, increase in the price of vehicles, etc. Project officials have now started the application process to extend its period.

The total cost of the project is 122 crore 13 lakh 37 thousand taka. So far, about 23.5 crore taka has been allocated. Another 6 crore taka has been approved.

Under the project, a boundary wall will be built around the city’s garbage dumping site, the Maylakanda area of Shambhuganj. Internal roads will be built for vehicle movement, there will also be gates. There will be mechanical facilities for environmentally friendly waste management here. These works are currently underway here.

According to sources from the Mymensingh City Corporation, garbage is always seen piled up on the main roads and important intersections of the city. In many places, there are no necessary dustbins. The City Corporation does not have modern vehicles, dustbin facilities, and state-of-the-art dumping stations to remove this waste. Due to the lack of regular waste removal, garbage accumulates in many areas. There is also no necessary manpower to remove this waste. In addition, the current dumping site is also completely unplanned and is being run in the traditional way. Citizens from different classes and professions feel that if the project were fully implemented, the face of the city would have changed.

Currently, the work on the dumping site in the Mylakanda area is going on, but the construction of dustbins is going on at a very slow pace. Although there is talk of building 200 dustbins, only about 20 to 22 dustbins have been completed. Citizens are reluctant to provide space for the construction of dustbins. There are 30 public toilets. Of these, work is ongoing on 24.

The major task of the project is the purchase of vehicles. The required number of cars will be purchased at a cost of about 70 crore taka. But the progress in this regard is disappointing. At the beginning of the project, there was no permission to purchase cars. When permission was obtained, the price of cars increased due to the appreciation of the dollar. Due to this, the tenders for purchasing cars have to be re-evaluated again.

Project officials said that three executive engineers in three regions of the City Corporation are responsible for looking after the works. They are responsible for seeing the good and bad of the project.

Project Director Jiban Krishna Sarkar said that due to some problems, the project will not be completed on time. However, we hope that all the work will be completed as soon as possible.
