Saudi Arabia wastes food worth 13 lakh crore taka annually.

The government of Saudi Arabia has formed a survey committee to prevent food waste. According to official estimates, a person wastes 184 kg of food annually, which amounts to 4 billion Saudi riyals, which is more than 13 lakh crore taka in Bangladeshi currency. This information was published in a report by the Middle East-based media outlet Gulf News.

According to the report, the Food Security Committee (GFSA) has formed this committee to prevent food waste and raise public awareness. Ahmed Al Fares, the governor of the committee, said that an attempt will be made to create awareness among everyone through the new survey. This committee will work in coordination with the ‘National Food Loss and Waste Reduction Program’ project.

The survey will also highlight the amount of food waste in all areas, starting from local production, import and transportation. The main objective of this survey will be to create an account of waste before and after food consumption. Using this information, the GFSA will find a practical solution.

“The authorities will look into how to bring about sustainable solutions through effective strategies,” Al Fares said.

According to statistics from the Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture last year, rice, wheat and bread were the most wasted. Of this, rice accounted for 34 percent. Flour and bread combined accounted for 30 percent.
