Hindu NGO worker commits suicide.
Fact-checking agency Rumor Scanner has debunked the propaganda that a Hindu NGO worker named Shukla De Tikla was killed in Boalkhali, Chittagong. They gave this information in a report published on their website on Saturday.
Rumor Scanner said that recently, a claim has been circulating on social media that a Hindu woman named Shukla De Tikla was killed in Boalkhali, Chittagong. In fact, a suicide due to mental stress is being promoted as a communal murder.
Investigation into the claim found that a report titled ‘Body of a female NGO worker recovered in Chittagong’ was published on the Jamuna Television website. After reviewing the report, it was found that the picture of the woman being promoted as a communal murder is similar to the picture of the woman used in the report. In addition, the report also revealed that the name of the woman in the picture is Shukla De. She was working as a field worker in a financial institution called Rupsha Sarbika Gram Unnayan Samabay Samity Limited.
Police recovered Shukla’s body from her house in Palpara village of Sreepur-Khardwip union of the upazila on the night of January 4.
Her relatives said that the institution had put pressure on her to collect the loan installments. Due to this, she chose the path of suicide out of frustration.
It is also learned that Shukla’s husband Sidul Pal has filed a case against four officials of the institution for allegedly inciting her to commit suicide in this incident.
In the statement of the case, she alleged that Shukla joined the institution’s Kanungopara branch as a field worker in May 2023. The institution provides microloans to the people of the area. The installment collection has been slow since August 5. As a result, there has been a conflict between Shukla and the institution’s officials for several months.
Last November, the institution deducted the outstanding installment money from Shukla’s monthly salary. The case alleges that Shukla committed suicide after being unable to bear the mental pressure and torture to collect the loan installments. Subsequent investigation revealed the same information from another report published on the Independent TV YouTube channel about the same incident.
Rumor Scanner said that the suicide of an NGO worker named Shukla Dey is being circulated on the internet as a communal murder, which is misleading.
