Tarique Rahman: “We Must Keep the ‘Bad Guys’ in Tight”
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman emphasized the need to manage problematic elements within the party during a virtual address at the 31-point workshop for BNP leaders in Tangail, Gazipur, and Narayanganj on Wednesday.
Tarique urged leaders and activists to maintain public trust by demonstrating what the party stands for and can achieve. He said, “Gaining people’s support through votes is a reflection of their trust. It’s not enough to make promises; people want to know what we will deliver.”
Highlighting the challenges faced by BNP over the years, he pointed out the sacrifices made by party members, stating that hundreds of leaders and activists have been killed, and many have endured jail and persecution. Tarique also spoke about his personal losses, referencing the deaths of his father, former President Ziaur Rahman, and his brother, Arafat Rahman, as well as the hardships faced by his mother, Khaleda Zia.
On managing internal challenges, he said, “Just like a family has to manage naughty children, we have to control those within the party who might harm it. These individuals cannot be allowed to undo all our hard work.”
Tarique also addressed criticisms about his focus on elections: “We are a political party, and elections are crucial. But our focus goes beyond that. People want to see results, not just words. We must show them what we can do and win their trust through our actions.”
He concluded with a call to action for party members to unite under BNP’s 31-point program and the “Take Back Bangladesh” campaign, which aims to restore democracy, freedom of speech, and economic rights to the people. Tarique stressed the importance of staying focused, maintaining public trust, and ensuring accountability within the party.
