Metrorail Faces Single Journey Ticket Crisis, Passengers Suffer.
The crisis over single-journey tickets for the Metrorail has reached a critical point, leaving many passengers frustrated. Due to the shortage, only passengers with MRT or rapid passes are being allowed to board the trains, while ordinary passengers are being turned away at the entrance. Notices about the ticket shortage have been posted at the stations, further adding to the confusion.
The crisis stems from the fact that over 200,000 single-journey tickets have gone missing, either lost by passengers or damaged beyond use. As a result, ticket vending machines (TVMs) at stations are frequently out of service, worsening the situation for daily commuters. In an effort to resolve the issue, the authorities are issuing 20,000 new tickets this month.
According to sources from the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), 268,441 single-journey tickets were originally issued when the Metrorail first launched. However, by October of this year, it was reported that more than 200,000 of these tickets were either lost or unusable. Many passengers had taken multiple cards, which contributed to the shortage, while others had damaged their cards. To address this, DMTCL had previously asked passengers to return any unused or extra cards, and even set up collection boxes at each station. Despite these efforts, by October, only 40,000 cards had been returned, while over 100,000 passengers were using the service daily.
The shortage has become a major issue, especially as more passengers rely on the Metrorail for their daily commute. To help ease the crisis, DMTCL is now issuing new single-journey tickets to replenish the supply and alleviate the strain on passengers.
