    The verdict on two writ petitions against the cancellation of the supervision order will be delivered today.

    A Division Bench comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury headed will pronounce its verdict in respect of two writ petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the 15th Amendment to the Constitution on Tuesday.

    Two Writ petitions have been included first in the agenda of the bench comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury.

    It is learnt that after hearing the arguments on the writ petition on December 4, the High Court bench fixed December 17 as the date of the verdict. The verdict on the much-discussed abolition of the caretaker government system and the 15th Amendment to the Constitution has a great deal of interest among people from all walks of life, including the political circles.

    The 15th Amendment Act passed by the National Parliament on June 30, 2011, had abolished the caretaker government system from the Constitution. In the same amendment, the Constitution mentioned Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the ‘Father of the Nation’, along with increasing the number of reserved seats for women from 45 to 50.

    Besides, finding the unconstitutional seizure of state power as treason, the provision of maximum punishment was added. While there was a provision for holding elections within 90 days of the end of the term earlier, this amendment added a provision for holding elections within the previous 90 days.

    On August 18, five eminent citizens including Badiul Alam Majumdar, editor of Sushasan khan Nagorik (Sujon), filed a writ challenging the validity of the 15th Amendment to the Constitution. Others are Tofail Ahmed, M Hafiz Uddin Khan, Jobairul Haque Bhuiyan and Zahra Rahman. Several parties including BNP, Jamaat, Insaniyat Biplob were parties to the hearing of this rule. Later, in October last year, freedom fighter Md. Another writ was also filed by Mofazzal Hossain, a resident of Raninagar, Naogaon, challenging the validity of 17 sections of the amendment.

    Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman and Deputy Attorney General Md. Asad Uddin. Senior lawyer Sharif Bhuiyan heard the case for the writ petitioners.
