Angry reaction calls for thorough investigation by Bangladesh.
Bangladesh has expressed its anger over the attack and vandalism on the Bangladeshi Assistant High Commission in Agartala, Tripura, India. It has called for immediate action and a thorough investigation into the incident. This response was given in a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday night.
It said that the Bangladesh government is deeply angered by the violent protests and attacks on the premises of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission by the protesters of the Hindu Sangram Samiti in Agartala. The information received conclusively proves that the protesters entered the premises by breaking the main gate of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in a pre-planned manner. At that time, in the presence of members of the local law enforcement agencies, they vandalized the flagpole, insulted the national flag of Bangladesh and also damaged the property inside the Assistant High Commission.
The statement mentioned, ‘The local police members who were in charge of guarding the premises were not active in controlling the situation from the beginning. All members of the Assistant High Commission are suffering from deep insecurity. The Bangladesh government would also like to point out that on November 28, a similar heinous attack was carried out on the diplomatic mission of Bangladesh and the national flag of Bangladesh was desecrated in Kolkata.
The incident in Agartala violated the Vienna Convention of 1961. Since it is the responsibility of the host government to protect diplomatic missions from any kind of intrusion or damage, the Bangladesh government calls on the Indian government to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident with a view to taking immediate action. At the same time, it calls for preventing any kind of violence against the diplomatic mission of Bangladesh in India, ensuring the safety of diplomats, non-diplomatic members and their family members.
It is worth noting that a group of extremist Hindus attacked the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, Tripura state of India, after a protest rally was held at the Circuit House in Agartala, Tripura state, India, to protest the persecution of minority Hindus in Bangladesh and the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das. They tore down the Bangladeshi national flag and set fire to the mission’s signboard. The Indian government has expressed “sorrow” over the incident.
