Statement at the UN on the explanation of Chinmoy’s arrest and minority persecution.

Vested interests are spreading exaggerated, baseless, fake reports and deliberately misinformation and confusion about the persecution of minorities in Bangladesh. This was stated in the statement given by Bangladesh at the 18th session of the UN Forum on Minority Issues in Geneva. In particular, the government has issued a statement at the UN against the misinterpretation of Chinmoy Das’ arrest.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that at the session, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Tarek Md. Ariful Islam said, “Bangladesh reaffirms that every Bangladeshi, regardless of religious identity, has the right to practice his religion or freely express his opinion. Ensuring the security of every citizen, including minority communities, is the cornerstone of the interim government of Bangladesh. This has been repeatedly assured by our top leadership to minority religious leaders and proven in the first 100 days of the government. Two advisors have been appointed from minority communities. The post-August 5 violence in Bangladesh was rooted in political and personal reasons, not communal ones.’

The statement further said, ‘There was no planned attack on minorities. Rather, after the mass uprising in July, the world witnessed how the entire society of Bangladesh, following our long tradition of communal harmony, came forward to protect its minorities. Our government under the leadership of Professor Yunus enjoys an overwhelming and unprecedented mandate from people of all religions. Unfortunately, when the people of Bangladesh have set a glorious example of religious harmony, we are being subjected to exaggerated, baseless and fake reports and deliberate misinformation and confusion by vested interests about the oppression of minorities. Sadly, we have seen this in this forum as well. Many such propaganda have been debunked in the global media. Our government is open to welcoming foreign journalists to Bangladesh to see the real situation.’

The statement said, ‘With great disappointment, we note that the arrest of Sri Chinmoy Krishna has been misinterpreted by some commentators as being on specific charges. The matter is being investigated by the courts. Despite the recent brutal murder of a Muslim lawyer, our government’s prompt intervention and the leaders of all religions have helped to keep calm and avert untoward incidents. Our government remains vigilant and will continue to work to maintain religious harmony at all costs and thwart any attempt to curtail the rights of minorities.’
