Zika patient identified in Dhaka
Dhaka: A patient infected with the Zika virus has been identified in Dhaka this time. The presence of the virus has been found in the bodies of eight people in the last three months.
On Tuesday (November 26), IEDCR Director Professor Tahmina Shirin told the media that Zika has been identified in sample tests over the past one and a half to two months. The people identified with Zika are residents of Dhanmondi, Shyamoli and Banani in the capital. Zika virus has also been found in mosquito samples found in the homes of the affected people.
The Aedes mosquito-borne Zika disease was first identified in the country in 2014.
Last year, the International Center for Diarrhea Research Bangladesh (ICDDRB) identified five Zika patients.
Infectious disease experts say that the detection of Zika is very important. This is a big warning sign. We need to think anew about treatment and prevention, and work.
IEDCR says that there is no specific treatment for Zika, and treatment should be given based on symptoms. The infected person should rest, drink plenty of water and fluids, and take medicine for fever and pain as prescribed by the doctor.
If the patient’s condition worsens, they should be admitted to the nearest government hospital.
According to the IEDCR website about Zika disease, in 80 percent of cases, the infected person does not show any symptoms of the disease. In the remaining 20 percent, some symptoms occur.
A person infected with Zika develops a reddish rash on the skin. Along with headache, red eyes, muscle and joint pain. Symptoms appear within 3 to 12 days of infection and last for 2 to 7 days.
In the last two and a half months, researchers from the Infectious Diseases Department of the ICDDRB have also identified Zika patients in their laboratory through sample tests. At least four people have been diagnosed with Zika in their blood samples.
In other words, IEDCR and ICDDRB researchers have confirmed that eight people have been infected with Zika in the last three months.
The situation of the Zika virus outside Dhaka is not known. Because samples from outside Dhaka were not tested by ICDDRB or IEDCR.
