    Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire comes into effect.

The United States and the United Kingdom have welcomed the ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah. The ceasefire agreement was approved by the Israeli cabinet on Tuesday.

After the agreement was signed, Israel’s two closest allies welcomed it in separate statements. Al Jazeera reported.

The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah came into effect on Wednesday. This brought an end to a bloody conflict that has been going on for more than a year.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden called the ceasefire “good news”. He said, “The aim of this agreement is to ‘permanently cease hostilities’. The Lebanese army will take control of ‘their own territory’ within the next 60 days.’

Along with this statement, Biden warned, ‘If the agreement is violated, Israel will exercise its right to ‘self-defense.’’

On the other hand, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, ‘‘The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah will provide some relief to the civilian population.’’

He then praised the ‘long-standing’ cessation of hostilities. He also called for the ceasefire to be ‘transformed into a permanent political solution in Lebanon.’’

Keir Starmer also called for a ceasefire to be implemented in Gaza. He wrote on social media, ‘‘We must move towards a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. All hostages must be released and restrictions on essential humanitarian aid must be lifted.’

Recently, outgoing US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron, Tata, have jointly launched a diplomatic effort to implement the ceasefire.

Hezbollah and the Lebanese government accepted a proposal made by the US last week. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to the proposal after a high-level meeting on Sunday night, November 24.

Then, Netanyahu called a cabinet meeting on Tuesday to discuss the ceasefire. The cabinet approved the ceasefire agreement at the meeting. After the meeting, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said in his address to the nation, ‘We will implement the agreement. However, if there is any violation of the agreement, we will respond forcefully.’

The Israeli Prime Minister also said, ‘We will stop military activities subject to full coordination with the US. But if Hezbollah violates the agreement or tries to re-arm, we will strike.
