Diabetic Retinopathy Unit Launched at Baitush Sharaf Hospital

A new unit has been launched at Cox’s Bazar Baitush Sharaf Hospital, the only specialized eye hospital in Cox’s Bazar district, to test and treat diabetic retinopathy, an eye disease caused by diabetes.

Derek Hodkey, President and CEO of Orbis International, inaugurated the unit at a function at the hospital last Monday. The function was attended by Orbis International’s Country Director in Bangladesh, Dr. Munir Ahmed, and Baitush Sharaf Hospital’s General Secretary, MM Sirajul Islam.

To establish the Diabetic Retinopathy Test and Treatment Unit, Orbis International donated a fundus camera to the non-profit hospital, which is used to diagnose diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.

Speaking at the event, Sirajul Islam said that the new unit will provide treatment for diabetic retinopathy patients in Cox’s Bazar and surrounding districts, where there was no such facility before.

Derek said that with love and sincerity, Baitush Sharaf Hospital is serving people of different communities, for which Orbis International is proud to work with this healthcare institution.

Baitush Sharaf Hospital provides eye care to the people of the entire Cox’s Bazar district, which has a population of about 3 million according to the 2022 census. Among them are more than 1 million forcibly displaced Myanmar citizens who were deprived of eye care in their homeland.

Dr. Munir said that Orbis wants to increase its cooperation with Baitush Sharaf Hospital in the future because these two organizations working on eye health can achieve a lot if they work together.

The fundus camera that Orbis donated to Baytush Sharaf Hospital is used to take pictures of the fundus, or the back of the eye, including the retina, optic nerve, macula, and retinal blood vessels. These images allow ophthalmologists to diagnose and treat conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
