Why was China left out of the Oscars?
The Scar Academy authorities said on their website that China has lost the eligibility to compete in the upcoming 97th Oscars.
The movie ‘The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru’ directed by Li Fang, Ming Fan and Lily Ganj has been sent from China according to all the rules.
It is known that this is the first time that China has sent a documentary film to the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category.
Why is it still left out? In response to this, the Academy authorities said, as per the rules, one film is submitted from each country for the international category. However, as per the rules, the films will be submitted in the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category. The film must be in the language of the country it will represent. May have English or foreign language if necessary but in any case it should not be more than 50%.
But the trouble is here. More than 50 percent of the dialogues in the Chinese documentary are in English.
Incidentally, this October 2 was the last time to submit movies to the Oscars. “The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru” was rejected from the preliminary selection of the Oscars, but will be considered for competition in the documentary feature category. Along with that, the Oscars will be considered for eight other categories.
‘The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru’ depicts the tragic events of World War II. In 1942, a Japanese ship, the Lisbon Maru, was carrying British prisoners of war. The ship was attacked by US Navy personnel. In this tragic event, 800 British soldiers died while 380 soldiers survived. They were rescued from the sea by Chinese fishermen.
In this year, ‘The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru’ was premiered at the Shanghai International Film Festival.
Incidentally, China has previously been nominated twice in the International Feature Film category. But no Oscar won till now.
Note that the Oscar shortlist will be published on December 17. Next year, the main event of the Oscars will be held on March 3.
